Hi there, I'm Sami. I grew up in Omaha, NE, stayed for college, and live near there now. I don't consider myself a writer, particularly well-spoken, or outgoing; so now you may ask: "Why are you writing a blog? That goes against everything you just said." The idea of Peatrowsky Passport has been a fun thought experiment for me for about 2 years. When I first imagined it, it was going to be a travel blog - tips and tricks of traveling, traveling regardless of budget, and reviews of places I have gone with friends, family, and on my own. When I was almost ready to start this project in 2020, the world shut down and so did my idea, for a bit.
If the last few years, and life in general, have taught me anything, it's that you can't wait for the perfect moment to have an adventure, because there will always be hurdles in your way and excuses to stop you from starting. So here it is - no more excuses - Peatrowsky Passport.
I try to be purposeful about living an adventure, finding joy in everyday moments, as well as looking forward to the big moments we typically think of as "adventures." I believe that everyone should live an adventure every day. I hope to reflect that in this blog.
Having been in basically the same place for 30 years, why did this idea start as a travel blog? When I was 19 I traveled for the first time on my own to San Diego, CA. On that trip, I got bit by the travel bug (cheesy, I know) and have been interested/obsessed with traveling since then. Still, traveling every year has always seemed so out of reach to me. I thought it took years to save for a trip (and sometimes it does) but that doesn't mean I have to be stuck at home. Closer to the present, I've been able to start fulfilling my wishes and traveling more, at least once a year - usually more, and part of that is because I learned how to be a smarter traveler. When going somewhere, local, regional, or across the country, the trip always goes better with some research and planning.
However, even with the best planning and budgeting, sometimes travel is out of the question. As I continued to think about this project and raise my kids, I realized that people may not know their own city, or even their backyard, very well. Being able to find adventure in your everyday life is important; whether it's exploring a new park, driving to a different small town or suburb for the day, or right in your own home. That is when Peatrowsky Passport morphed into a thought closer to what I am putting out there now - the need to live an adventure.
To go along with that thought, one of our favorite things about travel (and really anytime) is food. Food evokes memories, has been used for generations as a way to gather people, and can have strong ties to culture, heritage, and history. Sharing food and recipes is a great way to continue these traditions. I'm sure we all have a favorite recipe that mom/dad/grandma made when they were little. If you have kids, I'm sure they have a favorite meal (even if it's just Kraft Mac N Cheese right now). When we get together with friends or family, at least 95% of the time food is involved in some way.
With all of that in mind, through this blog I will share those tips and tricks I have learned, the cost (with real numbers), destination reviews, food reviews, and so much more. There will be stories of explorations close to home and how to find your own near you. You'll even find posts on whatever happens to catch my interest at the time. On the note of food, I will be sharing my friends and family's favorites in the "recipes" tab, where you will find everything you need to make a delicious meal or dessert, nothing more and nothing less.
About the Family
Sami
I'm the creator of this crazy idea, a mom of 2, a military wife, a lifelong learner, and am passionate about making the world a better place in any small way I can. I have a Bachelor's in Business Administration and am working on my Master's in Public Administration. I love learning from different perspectives and exploring what this wonderful world has to offer. Once I find a topic or activity that interests me I am all in, there is no halfway with me (for better or worse). I'm introverted until you get to know me and then you'll be hard-pressed to get me quiet again, apologies in advance if this comes out in some of the posts. I am a self-proclaimed Potter-head and am getting back into being an avid reader (children and school put a damper on reading for fun). I also love cooking and baking and sharing what I create with friends, family, and coworkers.
Kevin
My husband, Kevin, puts up with me and my Type A personality. He shares my ambition to travel but is much more "let's see how it goes" in his (lack of) planning on trips. We met in 2009 and started dating in 2010, with one of our very first dates being a "simple dinner," when he had asked me if I wanted to get Waffle House. I asked him, "Where is there a Waffle House near us?" His reply: "St. Joe, MO. Let's go!" And we went, traveling 3 hours for dinner, on a whim! He has always been the adventuring type. He joined the Military in 2010, spending the first part of his career in the United States Marine Corps, and then transitioned to the Army National Guard in 2017, where he continues to serve. He has a bachelor's in Criminology and Criminal Justice and currently works for a software company for his civilian career.
AJ
Our son AJ joined us in 2016. He is extremely smart, throws out the most random facts all the time, and loves school. He asks about taking trips to different places and recently asked if we could take him "across the ocean" sometime. I hope that we can do this for him eventually since I have yet to leave the country. Kevin and I love watching him learn more about the world and continue to be inquisitive beyond belief.
AM
In 2020, our daughter AM joined us. While she is still small (only 2 right now), her personality is not. She is bold, sassy, always on the move, and has no fear, to the point of climbing on things her older brother never would have climbed, or gone as high on, when he was her age. We are excited to watch her grow and see where her adventures take her.
Thanks for joining me in this new adventure. Comment below with any topics or ideas you are interested in (overview posts, specific travels, activities at home) and want to hear about to help me plan my next few posts.
See you next time!
Sami
